maribyrnong_logo_sml"On the spot compliance is critical to any government agency...We watched first hand as the system stopped threats and notified the administrator.  Seeing such effectiveness, we had no need to look any further."  Mark Bretherton, Systems Administrator

Challenge

The council is situated in Melbourne’s inner west.  It has around 500 staff and multiple sites. Local council networks handle massive amounts of inbound and outbound data daily.  Protecting the data integrity without disruption is paramount.

Generation-e contacted the council during a recent campaign.  The council was intrigued by our claims and conceded to a trial.  During a 2-week trial they were astounded to find out they were actually being attacked by a cyber-hack!

Once it proved itself on trial, the council looked no further.

IT Environment

The council had a perimeter firewall which was insufficient to stop threats and malicious activity which councils are increasingly exposed to with the increasing interactivity of their websites.

Solution

A Tipping Point Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) was installed as a trial and was not removed.  Once is identified the breach, the system stopped the threat immediately and to notified the administrator in real time.

Business Impact

The cyberhack problem is perpetual and escalating. The only solution is a technology that protects against problems before they are created.  The council now has a system that provides the following benefits:

  • It stops the threat before it can enter their network
  • They save time- no need for emergency and ad-hoc patching, or damage repair from attacks.
  • They reclaim bandwidth - stop their links carrying unwanted traffic.
  • They get the most comprehensive security for critical applications and infrastructure including protection against worms, trojans, viruses, denial of service attacks, Voice over IP threats, spyware, phishing and threats in Peer-to-Peer file sharing.
  • This is the only solution that will protect against new attacks.
