News These Boots Are Made For Running

Australia’s iconic manufacturer, Blundstone Footwear found out in their recent Australia-New Zealand project, how WAN Acceleration technology can slash the cost of WAN bandwidth and improve application performance.

WAN Acceleration technology saves money — and as George Bush tells us – “you can take that to the bank”. For instance, manufacturer Blundstone Footwear avoided the cost of adding servers to its local and international locations such as New Zealand by installing Juniper WAN Accelerators.

WAN Bridges the Tasman Sea
Blundstone staff in New Zealand needed access to applications in Australia, but the applications performed so slowly over the WAN that it could take an hour just to open a directory.

The initial plan was to replicate servers in countries such as New Zealand which was costed at over $80,000 per location. Instead, the company spent $20,000 on Juniper appliances that sped application performance over the WAN to LAN-like levels.

WAN Accelerators improve transaction times between sites by as much as 90%, reducing user frustration and making it possible for applications to perform properly over congested long distance links.

WAN Acceleration Set to Grow
“Despite their impressive results, these devices often are overlooked, mainly because potential users worry they might cause problems to data, block visibility of traffic, or fail and stall networks altogether”, says Eric Siegel, an analyst with the Burton Group.

These concerns are groundless, Siegel says. “They should do it now. You can really save money on these things. And there’s soft benefits like happier customers and more cooperation,” he says.

How WAN Acceleration Works
These devices help save money in two ways:
  1. They reduce the need for upgrading WAN bandwidth
  2. They enable the consolidation of servers, reducing the number of servers in corporate networks that need to be purchased, installed, maintained and repaired.

WAN Accelerators use a variety of means — compression, caching, boosting TCP efficiency, protocol optimisation, imposing QoS — to reduce the amount of traffic that crosses the WAN. They compress the traffic that is sent and make sure it is transferred efficiently, thus avoiding congestion.

Is WAN Acceleration Right for Your Business?
Organisations that benefit most from deploying WAN Acceleration are those that have:
  • Multiple offices
  • Server consolidation projects in the planning stages
  • Frame relay technology upgrades planned
